The driver, navigator, and their two mascots try to locate their position in an Antarctic rally race. The map the navigator is holding is based scroll map screen I saw in "Red Planet." This vehicle shell is partially based on a model I used to own. It's not quite visible, but the "cockpit" is slightly off-centered with a small cargo compartment to its right (blocked by the driver). Monster truck tire designs are actually pretty good for this environment since it provides low ground pressure without the complexity of tracks. Normally they also add a very long bar stretching out in front of the vehicle (not shown here). Its purpose is to hopefully prevent the vehicle from falling into an unseen crevasse. Unlike most monster trucks, this vehicle uses independent suspension for both front and rear wheels. This increases the ground clearance at the cost of complexity requiring CV joints for power transmission. They probably have to make other less visible modifications, most notably in any fluid system. Temperatures can reach -90C in Antarctica, cold enough to freeze some common fuels and hydraulic lines. Getting bogged in thick snow is less of a concern however since any snow tend to freeze into concrete-hard ice. In any case, Antarctica rarely sees any precipitation as it is the driest continent on Earth.
Daily DeviationGiven 2005-05-23One of the things I appreciate most about the pencil-based concept work of ~nolowfat is the thorough development of design characteristics, making the illustrations more than just eye candy. Rally Antarctica, for example, details not only the well-thought out mechanics of the vehicle, but also includes a few interesting (and accurate) facts about the surrounding landscape.
